Amoxicillin inhibits synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding penicillin-binding proteins causing the bacteria to lyse. Adding clavulanate to amoxicillin expands its spectrum of activity by inhibiting beta-lactamases that inactivate amoxicillin.
