Category: Critical Care Nursing The plague is caused by Yersinia pestis, a gram-negative bacillus. It is normally a disease of rodents that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected flea or by inhalation. There are three forms: pneumonic, bubonic and septicemic plague.
