Prerenal azotemia is characterized by increased urine specific gravity, a blood urea nitrogen (BUN) to creatinine ratio generally between 10 : 1 and 20 : 1, urine sodium concentration < 20 mEq/dL, and fractional excretion of sodium (FENa) < 1%.
