Thyrotropin is produced by the anterior pituitary. The physiologic role of thyrotropin is stimulation of thyroid gland. Specifically, thyrotropin promotes (1) thyroidal uptake of iodine, (2) synthesis and release of thyroid hormones and (3) thyroid growth.
