End-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) detectors measure the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in a sample gas. The patient's PaCO2 is typically 2-5 mm Hg higher than the ETCO2 and a normal reading in a trauma patient is approximately 30-40 mm Hg.
