Hypoxemia is a PaO2 of less than 80 mm Hg in adults breathing room air. Hypoxia is tissue- or cell-level decreases in oxygen availability. Thus hypoxia in patients with hypoxemia depends on the ability of the cardiovascular system to compensate.
